Conservation is not about recreating the past

Crystal Palace

In reference to your article Rebuilding the Crystal Palace (15 August), I think it would be a pseudo cultural travesty and I would rather the money was spent on a contemporary piece of architecture. When, as a society, are we going to get it into our heads that “conservation” is not about recreating the past but conserving the best of what still exists? And how can you justify recreating a Victorian thin glass shell authentically while being environmentally credible?”
