Architect who masterplanned London’s Southbank passed away last weekend.

Architect Rick Mather died over the course of last weekend aged 75, after a short period of illness.

Mather was famous for his work on the Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Ashmolean Museum and his masterplan for London’s Southbank.

He came to prominence in the Architectural Association, the oldest independent architecture school in the UK, in the 1970s before setting up his own practice, Rick Mather Architects, in 1973.

In a statement on the practice’s website colleagues said he was “an inspirational architect and friend” who would be “sorely missed”.

They added: “Rick combines a sharp wit and a charming manner, with a playful intelligence, which he brought to his work. He was a generous mentor who shared his enthusiasm with others.”
