Housebuilders are in nine-strong shortlist to take on Athlete’s Village development

Housebuilder Barratt and Manchester-based developer Urban Splash are amongst nine consortiums shortlisted to take on the athlete’s village and surrounding development sites after the 2012 Olympic Games.

Also included on the Olympic Delivery Authority’s shortlist are Qatari Diar, the backer behind the Shard and the ill-fated Chelsea Barracks development, housebuilder Galliard Homes, and contractor Sir Robert McAlpine.

The winning bidder will take on the 1,500 private homes of the athlete’s village, as well as six surrounding development sites for up to 2,500 houses. The development was originally to have been built and funded by Australian developer Lend Lease, who pulled out of the deal when the credit crunch hit.

The nine consortiums are:

  • Delancey & Qatari Diar
  • Dorrington & Pinnacle Capital
  • Galliard Homes
  • Grainger plc & Moorfield Group
  • Hutchison Whampoa Limited
  • Le Frak Organization, Aviva plc & J.P. Morgan
  • London & Stamford Property plc, David Wilson & Sir Robert McAlpine
  • Wellcome Trust
  • The William Pears Group & Urban Splash

The shortlisting comes after the ODA asked for expressions of interest for the site in October. The nine will receive details tender information in January and be asked to submit a bid for the site in the spring. A decision on the winning bidder will be made in the summer.

ODA chief executive David Higgins said: “The quality of this shortlist is a vote of confidence in the quality of the Olympic Village. Securing a shortlist with many of the leading property investors and managers both in the UK and around the world takes us an important step towards ensuring the Village becomes one of the strongest legacies from the Games.”
