Developer and Southwark Council finally sign development agreement for 374-unit scheme next door to Tower Bridge

Berkeley Homes and Southwark Council have signed a development agreement for a controversial 374-unit residential scheme at Potters Field next to Tower Bridge in London.

It follows several years of wrangling over the Squire & Partners designed site, which is part owned by Berkeley, the council and the City of London Corporation.

Tony Pidgley, chairman of Berkeley, said: “I am absolutely delighted that by working closely with Southwark Council, we are now able to progress the development of this world class site to provide an exciting scheme that will deliver much needed housing in London.”

An earlier scheme by Ian Ricthie was dropped, which was supported by former mayor Ken Livingstone in the face of opposition from Southwark. Berkeley eventually withdrew it because of the council’s opposition, despite winning a planning appeal and Livingstone threatening to use his mayoral powers to compulsorily purchase the site from Southwark.
