Derbyshire firm puts 45 staff on notice their jobs are at risk
Builder Bowmer & Kirkland has notified 45 staff they are at risk of redundancy, it has emerged.
The firm, which is based in the Derbyshire village of Heage, employs more than 1,300 staff in units across the Midlands, London and the North West.
Chairman John Kirkland told the Derby Telegraph that the move would affect both site and office-based staff. “This decision hasn’t been made lightly,” he said.
“The construction industry remains extremely challenging and it is with deep regret that we have to re-evaluate our staffing levels but it is necessary to ensure the competitiveness of our construction division in the future.”
The news emerged as the firm reported a 4% fall in revenue to £678m for the year to 31 August 2012, with operating profit down from £43.8m in 2011 to £20.8m.
The firm also said its directors took a pay rise of over £6m in 2012, with total directors’ pay rising to £16,586,266 compared to £10,370,744 in 2011.
