This week’s refurbishment products include the installation of an aluminium windows and doors system in Hackney, moveable walls in Manchester, and a wood canopy for a campus at Edinburgh University

Moveable Walls

Style Partitions has recently completed the design and installation of a modern moveable wall system as part of the refurbishment of a family home in Manchester. The DORMA Variflex system was installed as part of the works to the open-plan living area. The company said the DORMA Variflex system was chosen as it is effortless to open and close, and the lightweight panels can easily be moved into place by any member of the family.

Stairiser Inclined Platform Lift

Stannah has launched the Stairiser SR slimline inclined platform lift. The unit is supplied in an 800mm x 1000mm platform size as standard, or 800mm x 1250mm if Part M compliance is required. The company says the lift is designed to fit in constrained public places, improving straight-stair access for wheelchair users, while keeping the stairway free. The Stairiser SR and CR wheelchair platform stairlifts are available with different mounting configurations for maximum flexibility in load requirement and building type. They also come in a wide range of platform sizes and finishes.

Reynaers Curtain Wall System

Reynaers curtain wall system now offers an improved range of style variants with the introduction of the newly enhanced CW 50 range.  The company claims technical improvements and modifications to the system mean it now has the capability to carry significantly more glass weight as a result of the new developments with the components and glass supports. The CW50 system has been designed to achieve a thermal insulation UF value down to 0.8 W/m2K, depending on the profile combination.

Ceiling tiles and canopies

A combination of wood lay-in tiles and a customised wood canopy from Armstrong Ceilings have been specified for the refurbishment of Edinburgh University’s Hudson Beare Building on its King’s Buildings campus. The project has created a new social and study room for the students. Armstrong said their products were chosen by the university’s design group due to their cost-effectiveness and quality aesthetics.  The 50m2 canopy comprises approximately 600mm x 600mm of Armstrong’s US cherry MicroLook lay-in tiles, installed between plasterboard, on a Prelude 15 XL2 grid.

Wall insulation

Alumasc’s Swisslab and Swistherm systems have been specified for refurbishment works to approximately 150 houses in Chelmsford, Essex. The aim of the project was to retain the period features of the properties while providing effective insulation around them. Approximately 9000m2 of the Swisslab and Swistherm system were used. The company said their systems were chosen as the overall aesthetics of the development will be greatly enhanced and because of their very high levels of thermal performance.

Timber Windows

Timber windows by Mumford & Wood have been used as part of the extensive refurbishment of Lincoln Court, Maida Vale. Conservation tilt and slide sash windows have been installed by main contractor Balfour Beatty construction services. The windows were chosen because of the design feature that allows the lower sash to be released and tilted, which the company says allows for easy access, maintenance and cleaning. The windows are manufactured in the UK and have a claimed life expectancy of up to 65 years.

Movers and Makers

  • Abloy UK has unveiled a new brochure, which outlines the key benefits of using their cylinder locks, with information on size specifications and related accessories. The company claims their mechanism is unique as it is based on the use of rotating discs instead of traditional springs and pins, which the company says makes it bumproof and nearly impossible to pick. The cylinders can be specified for any commercial, retail or refurbishment projects.
  • Washroom products specialist Franke Sissons now has a number of products which are BIM-modelled. This follows the news that it is the government’s intention to require collaborative 3D BIM on its projects by 2016. The company claims this will result in BIM modelling being essential for any supplier looking to supply products to the construction industry.  Most of the products Franke have selected are specifically for hospital fit out works and refurbishments.
  • Swish Building Products has cut its carbon footprint, seeing a decrease of 27.4% since 2008. The company’s electricity consumption proved to be the biggest saving, down 26.2% on the base line year of 2008. The company was among several building product suppliers to secure the environmental management standard ISO14001 in 2007 for its cladding systems, used on major domestic and commercial refurbishment projects.
  • Knauf Insulation has announced that John Sinfield, it’s managing director of northern Europe, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Construction Products Association (CPA). The CPA represents the UK’s manufacturers and distributors of construction products and materials, and accounts for over a third of total construction output.  Sinfield will be responsible for acting as the voice of the construction products sector representing the industry-wide view of its members.
