Contractor given its second job on Toronto subway extension

Contractor Carillion has won a £123m contract to build a subway station in the city of Vaughan, Canada.

The contract has been awarded by the Toronto Transit Commission, and forms part of an extension to the Toronto transit system to Spadina. Carillion has already been awarded the £360m job to rebuild Toronto’s Union Station.

Carillion said the two-level, underground station will be constructed primarily from reinforced concrete, with a domed main entrance including skylights that will allow daylight to reach the underground concourse. The concourse construction will also allow for future rail connections.

Construction will start this summer, with completion scheduled for autumn 2014.

Carillion chief executive, John McDonough, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this major new contract, which reflects the reputation of Carillion Canada for quality and delivery. We look forward to working with the Toronto Transit Commission to deliver this important new multi-modal transport hub.”
