Managing director predicts newly-launched division will be one of top cladding contractors in Europe within five years

state of play

Chinese skyscraper specialist Far East Global is aiming to become one of the top three or four cladding contractors in Europe within five years, its managing director Peter Walker has said.

The £1.5bn-turnover firm - which launched a new European division before Christmas - is already bidding for major jobs across the continent.

In London the contractor is focusing on bids for luxury residential projects.

“There are a number of high-end residential schemes that are real and will go [in London],” Walker said.

Despite the firm’s reputation for working on super-tall buildings - including the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa - Walker said the firm would target “any project where we can add value”, whatever the size.

Far East Global has grown rapidly since its creation in 1969 to an 1,100-strong company.

The firm is targeting expansion across the West, after its acquisition of leading US-based cladding contractor Gamma in 2011.

Walker said the firm would benefit from existing relationships with UK companies across its international markets, including Balfour Beatty
and Arup.

He said: “We’ve entered the European market as a response to invites from clients.

“We are only basing senior management [in Europe] - all our design, procurement and production is centralised in China which creates efficiencies.”
