Fire breaks out at construction site in Southampton

A fire has broken out at the site of Osborne’s £50m student accommodation scheme in Southampton.

Fire fighters were called to deal with the blaze on the roof of the student accommodation block in the centre of the city at 11.39 this morning.

All workers were evacuated from the site and roads in the area were closed. No one was hurt during the incident.

Fifteen fire engines attended the incident and the fire has now been extinguished though there continues to be large plume of smoke over the city.

Southampton City Council warned people in the city centre to keep all doors and windows closed to keep the smoke out.

The £50m Mayflower Halls, which topped out in February, will house 1,104 students when it is complete. It is set to completed later this year.
