Civils and public push contractor to top position but John Graham storms into second place on back of two jobs

Kier

Kier has won the top spot in November’s contractors’ league table after another strong all-round performance last month.

The breadth of the company’s jobs enabled Kier to move up from the second place it has occupied for three out of the previous four months.

The firm booked £434m worth of contracts, the bulk of which were in the civils (£191.2m) and public (£188.6m) spaces.  Even excluding civils, the biggest contributor in terms of overall value, Kier still emerged in number one place.

The highest new entry in last month’s top 10 list, with £130m worth of new contracts, is John Graham, which has stormed into the league table on the back of two big contract wins.

The biggest of these is a £100m contract awarded to the Irish contractor by Associated British Ports to build a deepwater berth and jetty at the Port of Hull.

Graham also scooped a £20m internal repairs and M&E installation contract at the historic Coupland 3 building on the University of Manchester campus.

Graham just pipped into third place Bowmer & Kirkland, which secured £125.8m worth of contracts during November. The largest by value (£36.2m) of the firm’s eight contract wins was the fit-out of the Bond Street retail development in Chelmsford for Aquila Holdings.

October’s top placed contractor Lend Lease was in fourth place in November with two big new jobs. The largest was the £75m redevelopment of the former Bechtel House in Hammersmith for Legal & General. Lend Lease also secured the £42m job to build for Stanhope the first phase of its Ruskin Square development, which will regenerate a derelict site next to East Croydon railway station.
