Contractor leaps 14 places from July, boosted by big wins in Greenwich for housing arm Lovell
Morgan Sindall kept to the top of the contractors league table last month with a £252m contract haul.
The firm moved from 15th place in July into top spot in August, with the firm boosted by a £119m contract win for its housing arm Lovell to regenerate two housing estates in Greenwich.
The wins followed Lovell picking up a £150m contract in July, also for Greenwich council, to regenerate the Three Woolwich Housing Estate (pictured).
Lovell will work alongside housing association Asra to transform the three estates, to the east and west of Woolwich town centre.
Vinci Construction was also a big mover, up from 12th place in July to 2nd spot on both contractors league tables, including and excluding civils, after securing a £169m contract haul, including a £32m contract to build a retirement village overlooking Battersea Park in west London for developer LifeCare Residences.
Other big movers in the past month were Sir Robert McAlpine, with a £61m haul, which saw it move into the Top 10, along with John Sisk & Son, which won £56m of work.
Both firms did not make the Top 50 in July.
Overall the CPA/Barbour ABI construction index fell to 106, down from 109 in July and 119 in June.
The index, compiled by the Construction Products Association (CPA) using data from construction information provider Barbour ABI, measures contract awards and uses a January 2010 base of 100.
Noble Francis, economics director at the CPA, said drop was largely due to a return to normal after a spike in activity after the weather-affected first quarter.
