Leeds council has appointed three contractors to carry out energy efficiency work in the region over the next year ahead of the award of a £100m Green Deal scheme in the city region.

Willmott Dixon Energy services, SSE and Keepmoat will offer free and heavily discounted energy efficiency retrofits to residents in the city.

The scheme is focused on leveraging cash from the Energy Company Obligation, which targets households on benefits and those in hard to treat homes.

The scheme is the forerunner to a city-region wide Green Deal programme worth up to £100m, which is scheduled to start in 2014 and run for up to eight years.

Nigel Banks, Keepmoat’s group sustainability director, said he was “looking forward” to providing “warmer homes with lower running costs” to people in Leeds.

He added: “The health, lifestyle and economic benefits of warmer homes, particularly for those most in need, are tremendous and we will work closely with local communities to provide an inclusive service.”

Charles Farley, SSE national development director, said he was “delighted” with the win.

He said: “SSE has installed cavity wall, solid wall and loft insulation measures, heating and boiler replacements across the country and we want to help the residents of Leeds reduce wasted energy and make their homes warmer.”

Rob Lambe, managing director, Willmott Dixon Energy Services, said: “Willmott Dixon is delighted to be working in partnership with Leeds City Council to create warmer homes and reduce the fuel bills of local residents.”

Mark Dobson, executive member for the environment at the council, said: “This new partnership will allow us to continue to support residents who need that extra bit of help to cope with spiralling fuel bills.”
