Architect sees off competition from six other firms

Architect Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios has been appointed to conduct a major redesign of London’s Southbank Centre.

The architect saw off competition from rival firms OMA, Grimshaw Architects, Allies & Morrison, Heneghan Peng, Eric Parry and van Heyningen & Haward to win a place on the £43m job.

The firm will design the refurbishment of galleries, performance space and back stage areas in the complex, including redesigning access and upgrading services.

It will also develop plans to reclaim underused space in the complex to deliver a more flexible platform for the centre’s festival programmes.

Rick Mather, Southbank Centre’s masterplan architect and a member of the selection panel, said: “We heard a huge amount of high quality and serious thinking demonstrating seven quite different approaches to this part of the site.

“Feilden Clegg Bradley Studio’s proposals won because they best understood the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery complex and how it can be enjoyed and used more effectively.”
