Chancellor will announce new funding in tomorrow’s Autumn Statement

The government has earmarked an extra £600m to build 100 new free schools in England over the next three years, the Chancellor will announce tomorrow.   

Funding is not expected to come from the existing education budget with Chancellor George Osborne due to set out the details in his speech at around 12.30pm tomorrow.

All 100 schools will be free schools funded by the government but run by independent groups such as charities or businesses.

About 12 selective specialist maths schools are said to be planned for pupils aged between 16 and 18.

These would be subject to a special application process and would be connected to universities with impressive maths departments.

The government hopes the specialist institutions will produce top-flight mathematicians who can work in digital technologies and found innovative start-up companies.
