New pot of money for infrastructure and housing projects comes on top of £66bn announced in 2009

The Libyan government has announced it will spend £36bn on new infrastructure and housing projects under a plan to position itself as the “gateway to Africa”.

The UK government-sponsored South East Centre for the Built Environment is holding a briefing for UK firms on how to break into Libya and details of the spending plans on 11 June.

The new pot of money comes on top of the £66bn it said in 2009 it would spend up until 2012 on infrastructure and housing.

A recent UK Trade & Investment study identified Libya as “potentially the fourth most attractive overseas market for UK exports by 2012-2014”.

John Ellis, SECBE’s Business Development Director: “Skills such as design, project management, contracting and specialists in niche services are especially in demand. There is a strong Libyan desire to start manufacturing building materials locally too. We have already built up outstanding market intelligence and an excellent network of key contacts, to give companies a real inside track.”

The SECBE seminar runs from 9.00am to 12.30pm on 11 June at the Arab British Chamber of Commerce in London and costs £75 plus VAT. To book a place, contact Tina McGeachan on Tina@secbe.org.uk or call 0118 920 7204.
