Construction has begun on Vietnam’s tallest building - Vincom Landmark 81 – in the country’s capital, Ho Chi Minh.

The Atkins-designed 460m-tall building comprises 25 thin sections with multiple roof gardens.

The 81-storey mixed-use tower from local developer Vingroup will face the Saigon River and feature a hotel, apartments and a shopping centre at the base.

Construction of Vincom Landmark 81 tower is expected to be completed in 2017.

Bertil de Kleynen, director of architecture and landscape for Atkins in Asia Pacific, said the tower marked “significant” progress for Atkins in Vietnam, adding that on 17 July the firm signed a strategic partnership agreement with Vingroup that could bring the firm more opportunities beyond this.

Last week Atkins revealed it had launched a South-east Asian architecture practice based out of nearby Singapore.
