Designed by Scott Brownrigg the new school will accommodate 750 pupils
A team led by contractor Bam and including architect Scott Brownrigg has been selected to develop a new £22m school in Wales.
The existing 1950s Brecon High School by the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons National Park will be replaced with new school buildings totalling 7,500m2 to accommodate 750 students.
The new school will comprise three teaching areas, a main hall, sports hall, studio, learning resource centre and 6th form featuring natural stone facades.
The outline business case for the construction of the new school for 11 to 18-year-olds in Brecon was approved last autumn as part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme.
Designs for the new school will be submitted for planning in the autumn and completed in time for the new school year in September 2019.
Scott Brownrigg director Jon James said: “The design allows for much needed 21 Century teaching facilities and given its unique location, the design opportunities and use of materials will reflect the context to ensure the school enhances the local area.”
Acting Head of Schools at Powys County Council, Gareth Jones said, “We have reached a significant stage in this important project for secondary school provision in South Powys. Appointing a contractor means we will be able progress design and build plans.”
