Division being headed up by former Ramboll engineeer

Google architect BIG has launched an in-house engineering division.

Called BIG Engineering, the practice has hired the co-founder of the computational design group at engineer Ramboll UK, Duncan Horswill, to head up the initiative. Horswill was also the former chief operating officer at Danish firm Søren Jensen Engineers.

BIG founder Bjarke Ingels (pictured) said: “As we started [bringing in] our own engineers, we have learned how much more impactful our design thinking can be when the expertise resides internally.

“Having engineers join our group of architects, product designers and landscape architects is the inevitable next step towards providing the interdisciplinary design innovation that we want.”

Last week BIG and Heatherwick Studio unveiled the latest images of its plans for Google’s new campus at Mountain View in California. The pair are also working on the Google headquarters building at King’s Cross in London.
