Practice chosen for 15km Dubai rail project

London practice Weston Williamson has won the race to design a £2.2bn rail link for the Dubai World Expo 2020.

The project will see the existing Dubai Red Line extended by a further 15 km from Nakheel Harbour & Tower to the Expo site along a route which includes seven new stations, an 11.8 km viaduct and 3.2 km of underground track.

The transport specialist, which has linked up with US consultant CH2M Hill for the work, beat off competition from 10 rival bids for the project which will be completed by 2020.

Weston Williamson partner Chris Williamson said, “Dubai is a superbly dynamic city; it is a great chance to be a part of its expansion, particularly to contribute to the vast public transport opportunities by creating a proud legacy for the people.”

The Dubai 2020 Expo site is expected to host more than 25 million visitors and feature pavilions representing 180 countries.
