Carillion has achieved financial close on a 20-year programme to deliver up to £800m worth of regeneration projects across Sunderland.

The construction giant has agreed the terms of a joint venture to carry out the programme with Sunderland City Council.

The north east local authority announced in November 2013 that it had selected Carillion as its strategic partner for the joint venture.

This contract, which is designed to secure the redevelopment of key sites across the city, is potentially worth up to £800m to Carillion over the 20 year life of the programme.

Igloo Regeneration has been appointed to provide development and asset management services to the joint venture.

Carillion chief executive, Richard Howson said: “Our success reflects Carillion’s ability to offer solutions tailored to the specific needs of our customers and our ability to provide a fully integrated solution that will deliver the immediate and long-term services required by the council.
