Carillion has won the £75m contract to build the first phase of Liverpool Football Club’s stadium expansion scheme.

The job will see the firm expand the main stand at Anfield as well as undertake associated public realm improvement.

Work on the project is expected to start later in 2014, subject to planning consent.

The scheme will see the capacity of the main stand rise by around 8,300, taking the overall capacity of Anfield to around 54,000.

Carillion chief executive Richard Howson, said: “We look forward to working closely with Liverpool Football Club to create new world-class facilities at its famous Anfield Stadium.”

The main stand work is the first phase in Liverpool’s wider £150m stadium expansion plan, designed by architect KSS, with future work on the Anfield Road stand seeing an increase in its capacity of around 4,800 seats, taking the total stadium capacity to 58,800.
