Engineering giant appointed to shore up Thames Estuary defences
US consultant CH2M Hill has been appointed to deliver the environment agency’s £300m Thames Estuary flood defence programme.
CH2M Hill, which is working with UK firms including contractor Balfour Beatty, saw off competition from rival US consultant Jacobs to win the contract.
The firms will refurbish and upgrade the current Thames estuary flood management systems over the next ten years.
Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said: “This £300m investment will reduce the risk of tidal flooding in the Thames, protecting over a million people and £200bn worth of property to ensure that London’s vital economy is not affected by adverse weather.”
CH2M Hill’s regional managing director Mark Thurston said he was “delighted” to have won the job.
He added: “This programme fits perfectly alongside our other major infrastructure programmes in London including the Thames Tideway Tunnel, Crossrail and High Speed 2 and will help maintain London as a thriving and global leading city.”
