Seven architects in the running to plan institution's new West London home

David Chipperfield, Caruso St John, Tony Fretton, Stanton Williams, John Pawson, Haworth Tompkins and Dutch practice Claus en Kaan have been shortlisted to plan a new home for the Design Museum.

The museum is moving from its current building near Tower Bridge to the Grade II listed Commonwealth Institute in West London, which is being developed by Sir Stuart Lipton’s outfit Chelsfield.

An architect will be appointed in April and the winning design is expected to preserve the essential characteristics of RMJM’s original build.

The museum is part of a larger development on the site, which also includes 62 homes.
