University College London launches two procurement tenders worth £120m for Stratford campus

University College London (UCL) and the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) have launched two procurement opportunities for the Olympicopolis campus worth a combined £120m.

UCL has issued contract tenders for a £40m mixed-use academic and residential facility on Pool Street and an £80m academic facility at Marshgate.

The UCL-led procurement for the Pool Street development is seeking to appoint a multi-disciplinary design team for the new facility, comprising approximately 12,500sq m of university residential space and 4,000sq m of academic space. The building will be located on a site south of the London Aquatics Centre and the appointed design team will be responsible for progressing the detailed design of the facility up to, and possibly beyond, the successful determination of the detailed planning application.

The second UCL-led procurement seeks a design team to develop detailed plans for the Marshgate development, comprising approximately 33,500sq m of academic space for UCL, public realm and associated infrastructure on land to the south of the ArcelorMittal Orbit, currently used as interim event space in the park.

The contract tenders include the design of the associated external landscape, public realm and infrastructure.

UCL has valued the Marshgate design contract between £2.5m and £4m, and the Pool Street contract at between £1.5m and £2.5m.

Project director for UCL East Adam Harman said: “Today marks the start of the process to deliver a suite of exemplary buildings and spaces to transform academic innovation in east London in the same way that UCL’s iconic Wilkins Building helped transform Bloomsbury in 1826.

“These two commissions will set the tone for a pioneering and accessible education hub that UCL will develop over the coming decades.”

UCL has already shortlisted five design teams for its new 125,000sq m campus just south of Zaha Hadid’s Aquatics Centre.

Earlier this week the architects responsible for the Stratford Waterfront element of Olympicopolis - Allies & Morrison, O’Donnell & Tuomey, Arquitecturia and Gustafson Porter - released their most detailed proposals yet for new homes for the V&A, UAL’s London College of Fashion, Sadler’s Wells and potentially the Smithsonian.
