David Hutchison was 78

HLM co-founder David Hutchison has died aged 78.

A graduate of the Bartlett, he joined Powell and Moya in 1960 becoming a registered architect two years later, working on the firm’s Pimlico library, Wexham Park and Princess Margaret, Swindon, hospital projects.

He then helped set up Hutchison Locke and Monk in 1964 with two ex-Bartlett colleagues, Graham Locke and Tony Monk.

The firm emerged after winning the Paisley Civic Centre competition and the scheme helped the trio grow the business over the following years, especially in the health sector.

He left HLM after nearly 30 years in 1991 to set up his own business DHA, based in Bath.

A former RIBA councillor, he was awarded an MBE for services to architecture and the community in 1976.
