Kier has been appointed by the University of Cambridge to build a £58m laboratory on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The project will provide between 14,000sq m and 17,000sq m of research space.

Pre-construction works are due to begin immediately, with Kier working to finalise the design for the building.

Work is then due to start on site in Q3 2015, and is expected to complete in summer 2017.

The Biomedical Campus will also be home to a new headquarters for Astra Zeneca, as well as hospital buildings.

Kier project director, Nick Mann, said: “We are delighted to have won this contract with one of our longest-standing and most valued clients; we completed our first contract for the University of Cambridge in 1996 and we are currently on site at both the Arup Building and the Department of Genetics.

“This latest project will be our 23rd with the University, and the second largest we have undertaken with them, having completed the £69m Stirling Prize-winning Sainsbury Laboratory in 2010.

“Our collaborative approach to working with our clients, partners and supply chain has been key to the long-term success of this relationship, and we look forward to delivering this new facility, which will bring the total value of our work to date with the University of Cambridge to £215m.”
