King’s plans for a new South-east London campus progress
King’s College London has won planning for a student halls-led mixed-use scheme in Rotherhithe, east London.
The complex on the site of Rotherhithe’s former Mulberry Business Park – which includes 770 student bedrooms and 33 affordable homes – is the first element in King’s expansion plans for the former docklands area.
King’s has expressed an interest in developing a brand-new campus on the site of the Daily Mail’s former printing press at 15-acre Harmsworth Quays next door, where British Land acquired the leasehold in April.
The student halls-led scheme will also include a health centre and retail space.
The two sites are near Canada Water station, which links the area to central, north, east and south-east London via the Jubilee line and overground line.
Councillor Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “King’s College is an internationally renowned and respected university of great standing and I welcome them to an exciting part of the borough, this can only add to the progress made as part of the Area Action Plan, including the new super-library, new homes and public space.
“Last night’s decision supports the council’s aspirations to create a vibrant town centre for Canada Water and opens doors to the potential for a new campus in the adjacent Harmsworth Quays area.
“I look forward to what the students will bring to the area and hope that they will make it their permanent home in years to come.”
