Crossrail staffer threw chairs and bottles at attackers
Laing O’Rourke employee Gerard Vowls has been praised by the contractor after he fronted up to terrorists at London Bridge on Saturday.
The Crossrail worker had been out with friends in Borough Market when he witnessed the attack, which left seven dead and scores injured.
Vowls told ITV’s This Morning how he tried to distract the terrorists, who were attacking pubs and restaurants, by hurling objects at them.
“They ran towards the Market Porter pub and that’s when I shouted, ‘Oi, terrorist cowards, and I started throwing chairs and bottles’,” he said. “I was screaming, ‘Run, run, run, they’ve got knives’.”
The Laing O’Rourke worker saw three men and one woman stabbed in the atrocity. “One of the terrorists shouted, ‘This is for Allah,” he added.
Vowls’ bravery has been lauded by Laing O’Rourke.
Viv Jones, business unit leader of UK infrastructure, said: “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those so tragically killed and injured on Saturday night. We thank the police and emergency services for their swift response and for the bravery also shown by members of the public in the face of such horror.
“One such person seeking to help those around him, was our colleague Gerard Vowls, and we are immensely proud of his courage.”
