A clutch of UK firms have now set up offices in Colombia to take advantage of the country’s fast-growing £55bn construction market

A Building market report on Colombia published this week reveals that Arup, Currie & Brown and McBains Cooper have joined Steer Davies Gleave in setting up offices in the capital, Bogotá (pictured). Atkins and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners have also picked up work in the country.

The report comes as the Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos signed a historic peace deal with left-wing guerrilla group Farc (the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) this week, which is expected to end five decades of armed conflict in the country and give the economy a major boost.

Building’s report finds that the real estate market, worth £22bn a year, is now the main focus for UK firms in Colombia, alongside the traditionally strong infrastructure sector.

Steer Davies Gleave is one of the firms sizing up residential sector opportunities. Germán Lleras, principal consultant in the consultant’s Bogotá office, said: “There is a big investment in housing, not only in the private sector but also the government is developing free or low-cost housing.”
