Contractor beats Kier, BAM and Vinci to Northumberland emergency hospital project
Lend Lease has beaten off competition from Kier, BAM, Vinci and Farrans to be appointed to design and build a £70m hospital in Northumberland.
The 30,000 sq m specialist emergency care Hospital at Cramlington, for the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, will be built on a greenfield site to the east of the town.
The concrete-frame building will boast in-patient wards, an accident and emergency care centre, operating theatres, critical care, maternity, paediatric facilities, radiology, X-ray and a full range of support accommodation.
The hospital is the first in England to have emergency care consultants on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
This contract win follows the firm’s appointed to build the £89 million Strathclyde Technology and Innovation Centre and the £20 million Mearns Academy in recent weeks.
Michael Dyke, EMEA executive director for Lend Lease project management and construction, said: “The Cramlington contract aligns perfectly with our focus on delivering steady growth, with the right customers, despite some very tough market conditions.”
Work began on site at Cramlington last month, with handover to the trust expected in late 2014.
