Meanwhile, Nixon Property and TP Bennett have been given the go-ahead by planners for another scheme on the 24-acre site

Legal & General has submitted a planning application to create 100,000ft² of office space (pictured below) at the gateway to Newcastle Science Central.

Designed by Ryder Architecture the scheme is located on the masterplan for the city’s new technology and research hub Science Central - a 24-acre site of the former Scottish & Newcastle brewery in the heart of the city.

Subject to planning permission, L&G anticipates being on site with the project by January next year.

Rachel Dickie, urban regeneration investment manager at Legal & General Capital, said:  “Working with leading architect, Ryder, it was important to us all that the design of this building pays homage to Newcastle’s rich history, while also embracing and supporting its technology savvy future.

Elsewhere on the Science Central masterplan developer Nixon Property has received planning permission from Newcastle City council for a new 10-storey student accommodation scheme (pictured below).

The project designed by architecture practice TP Bennett will create 246 new student beds, in a mix of studios and cluster apartments of three, five and six bedrooms.

Nenad Manasijevic, project lead at TP Bennett, said: “This project will be a major step in the urban regeneration of a city block bounded by St James Boulevard, Wellington Street and Gallowgate in Newcastle City Centre, ultimately providing a mixed-use development with a balance of residential and student accommodation.

“It is a critical piece of the Science Central masterplan.”
