Originally designed by Alfred Waterhouse in the 1860s the 140-year old building is in need of repair

Manchester City council has appointed a project team for the £328m revamp of the city’s grade I listed Town Hall.

The successful bidders for the scheme include heritage architect Purcell, while Ramboll has bagged the structural and civil engineer role and Faithful + Gould has picked up the QS contract.

Arup has been appointed as the building services and engineering contractor and Planit IE will work on the landscape design.

The project will see the building designed by Alfred Waterhouse in the 1860s repaired and upgraded over seven years.

The state rooms including the Great Hall and its Ford Madox Brown murals will be restored in addition to repairs to the roof, stonework, and drains. Work will also be carried out on the electrics, plumbing, heating, ventilation and lift installations.

The council’s deputy leader Bernard Priest said: “The work required to repair and upgrade the Town Hall will demand real expertise and dedication, so we have selected our consultants with great care. We look forward to working with them on this once-in-a-lifetime project.”
