Igloo scheme will include 300 new homes

Plans by Metropolitan Workshop to redevelop part of Brixton in south London have been sent in to planners at Lambeth council.

Other architects working on the deal include Haworth Tompkins, Mae, Foster Wilson and Zac Monro. Urban regeneration specialist Igloo is development manager.

Proposals include just over 300 homes, a new home for local theatre, Ovalhouse Theatre, community spaces and refurbishing Carlton Mansions. Barbour ABI values the scheme at £70m.

The site off Coldharbour Lane sits between the tube and rail stations and was first identified as a potential development area back in 2009.

As well as the masterplan and public realm, Metropolitan Workshop is behind 165 new homes, educational space and retail.

Haworth Tompkins will be responsible for 70 homes, community facilities, a nursery and retail with Mae behind 65 extra care homes. Foster Wilson will design the new theatre and Zac Munro is in charge of the mansions refurbishment. Four new buildings will be built on the area’s Somerleyton Road, ranging from two to 11 storeys.

The council is behind the development along with the theatre and a community group called Brixton Green.
