Theis & Khan’s conversion for existing building just five doors down from current HQ

Architect’s body the RIBA has submitted an application to transform a building sitting just a few doors away from its current landmark premises into its new high-spec head office.

The application for 76 Portland Place, drawn up by Theis and Khan Architects, includes the complete refurbishment of the existing six storey building and an associated two-storey mews building, with a glazed atrium to be constructed to link the two.

In a statement the RIBA said the conversion would reduce the existing building’s reliance on mechanical heating, cooling and ventilation, and would add a “green roof” to the building.

The move away from its iconic Art Deco headquarters in 66 Portland Place is designed to allow the organisation to maximise the building’s potential as a venue for its members and external events.

The Theis and Khan team includes Max Fordham and Price & Myers and was selected following a competitive process managed by Riba Competitions.

76 Portland Place will provide accommodation for staff currently located at 66 Portland Place and in satellite offices at 77 Portland Place and RIBA Enterprises at 15 Bonhill Street whose leases are shortly due to expire.

RIBA staff will move to 76 Portland Place by December 2014.
