RICS launches new BIM qualification

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has launched a new qualification to recognise expertise in building information modelling (BIM).

The RICS’ BIM manager certification, launched today (18 October), will be open to quantity surveyors and construction professionals already working with BIM.

The RICS claims the certification is the first global BIM standard to be established by a professional body.

Alan Muse, the RICS’ director of built environment, said the certificate was established in response to its members and clients’ demands “for a basis on which to judge BIM competencies.”

Applicants need to provide a 2,000 word BIM case study detailing their personal involvement, capability, knowledge and understanding as well as a critical reflection of the project.

In addition, they must demonstrate their BIM skills across three core competencies, including BIM initiation, processes and collaboration and integration as well as in at least one of two optional competencies covering commercial and technical abilities.

They will be assessed by a group of experts from across the industry.

A spokesperson for the Government’s BIM Task Group, said: “We are delighted to see such a proactive response to raising awareness and capability in support of the BIM agenda through the development of a BIM Manager Certification. 

“We applaud RICS’ early entry to this market.”

RICS is also planning BIM certifications for facilities management and geomatics professionals.
