A scheme by Robin Partington Associates to transform Shepherd’s Bush Market has been dropped after a long fight by traders.

Hammersmith & Fulham council confirmed that developer and market owner Orion and its joint venture partner U+I have decided not to pursue the current planning application, which included a seven-storey block of 250 flats.

Traders at the market took legal action over the Robin Partington Associates-designed project, going to the Court of Appeal where a previous compulsory purchase order – granted by former communities secretary Eric Pickles – was quashed earlier this year.

Orion has also handed over the day-to-day running of the 102-year-old market to regeneration specialist U+I, which is to look at alternatives for improving the area.

U+I deputy chief executive Richard Upton said: “Following conversations with the local authority and traders, we are looking at ways to improve the existing market. This is a new start, with a new team led by U+I, and as such we will not be bringing forward the previous scheme.

“We look forward to consulting with traders and the local community over the coming months to make improvements to the existing market and resolve current matters with the market tenants before consulting and discussing any new proposals that may come forward.”
