Taylor Wimpey is providing a new primary school at its Battersea Park East scheme

Taylor Wimpey has won planning approval for 290 homes in the south London Nine Elms regeneration zone.

The London borough of Wandsworth’s planning committee gave the thumbs up last night for the Battersea Park East project, as part of which the volume house builder is funding the redevelopment of a local primary school.

The application by Taylor Wimpey Central London also includes approximately £7.8m towards improving the cost of improving transport infrastructure and local community services.

Around 60 of the new homes will be reserved for Wandsworth residents to rent or buy at cut prices.

The 4.5 acre site, which is currenly sliced through by two Victorian railway viaducts, is currently home to a series of commercial and light industrial buildings and the existing primary school.

The approved scheme is designed to reconnect the fragmented site with a network of pedestrian and cycle routes, including new links through the viaduct arches. The newly refurbished arches will also include shops, cafes, bars and galleries.

The homes will be accommodated in a number of new buildings ranging in height from one to 18 storeys. The scheme will also include 5,440 sq m of public space, including a new public square.

Planning applications committee chairman Sarah McDermott said: “This project will stitch together a badly disjointed corner of Battersea.”
