Building’s sister title gives its award for the UK’s worst building to 20 Fenchurch Street in the City of London

The winner of this year’s Carbuncle Cup, the award for Britain’s worst building has been awarded to 20 Fenchurch Street in the City of London.

The Carbuncle Cup is organised by Building’s sister publication, Building  Design. Nicknamed the Walkie Talkie because of its bulbous shape, the 37-storey office tower was designed by architect Raphael Vinoly for developer Land Securities.

Thomas Lane, editor of BD said, “It bulges out inelegantly towards the top in a cynical move to maximise the amount of high-value space at the upper levels.

“It has melted parked cars, prompted complaints about high winds at its base and the sky gardens weren’t built to the approved design.”
