The competition watchdog has decided not to refer Kier’s proposed takeover of services firm May Gurney to the Competition Commission.

In a statement today, the Office for Fair Trading said it had decided, on the information currently available to it, not to refer Kier’s proposed £221m acquisition of May Gurney, which was announced last month.

Kier’s offer for May Gurney trumped Costain’s proposed £178m merger with the service firm.

The decision comes after the OFT had last month said it required extra time to examine the proposed acquisition, setting a deadline of 10 June to consider the proposals.
