Top architects on longlist to design Manchester's Whitworth gallery extension

28 July, 2009

Zaha Hadid and Edward Cullinan Architects are among 11 big names on the RIBA’s longlist to design an extension of the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.

The other practices longlisted are: Amanda Levete Architects, Dixon Jones, Eric Parry Architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Haworth Tompkins, MUMA, Stanton Williams and Stephenson Bell working with Carmody Groarke.

The 10 teams were selected from 139 expressions of interest for the scheme to extend and remodel the grade II-listed gallery.

The longlisted designers will now attend interviews with the jury before a shortlist of five is drawn up to go through to the design phase of the competition. The winner is expected to be announced in early November.

The gallery, which was founded in 1889 houses works by Henry Moore and LS Lowry, and won an RIBA regional award in 1995 for its Sculpture Court, designed by Ahrends, Burton & Koralek.
