As somebody who has spent 47 years in the industry, with every penny earned being subject to PAYE, I think we are missing a fundamental point in this debate (24 July, page 9)

The fact would seem to be that these schemes, for years, have avoided paying proper taxes. Now that the government is seeking to collect taxes that are properly due, the “self employed” and the contractors are calling foul. Where are the extra costs that are to be passed on? Can I ask my employer to pay me more because I have to pay proper tax? This is not an extra cost.
