Regarding Nick Chronias’ article on equal opportunities (“Lip service won’t do”, 24 April, page 52), what a lot of waffle to say that we should all uphold the law

Employees must be able to speak and understand English and accept instructions without delay and disruption. Are there sufficient “trained” ethnic minorities to fill all the places that have to be filled? If not, how can construction teams fulfil the requirements? In the past I have been in the position of interviewing six candidates for a position. I chose the one I knew would work well within my team, not the one with the most qualifications or experience.

You cannot base a selective process “entirely on merit” with no reference to the team. Let’s get on with the work and stop contemplating our navel.
