Further to your article "Battle of Trafalgar" (21 February, page 22) I would like to emphasise an important aspect of the story that may have been overlooked.
This incident provides a clear demonstration of the Considerate Constructors Scheme in action; we responded immediately to the original phone call, alerted the contractor concerned and reported the action taken to the complainant.

The scheme does not condone or support poor housekeeping of sites or threatening behaviour, and we do not attempt to defend the incidents you reported in this case. However, it should be noted that after receiving the complaint from your author, the scheme immediately informed Fitzpatrick of the incident at its Trafalgar Square site, and the employees involved were disciplined.

Our site-based publicity invites calls from the public. None has been received, but the scheme has twice monitored this site and further monitoring will take place to encourage high standards.
