I am writing in reponse to Malcolm Taylor’s etter on the Woodhorn Colliery in Northumberland (9 September).

Malcolm seems unaware of what the Woodhorn Project is actually doing, which is creating a museum and archive focused on telling Northumberland stories. We are not about simply duplicating the work of coal-mining attractions.

Coal-mining is a significant part of our county’s heritage and four of our opening exhibitions focus on bringing it alive for customers. But we plan to exhibit, debate and research many other aspects of Northumberland as well.

Finally, I’m not at all concerned by the “theme park” tag. I’d rather be involved with a popular attraction than a dead one.
