Cabe’s recent notice advertising that it is looking for architects to join its design panel but expecting them to work for free has attracted much criticism.

Putting the debate about any cheapening of the industry to one side, many professional indemnity policies are only valid where work has occurred for remuneration. No pay equals no cover.

This type of policy is being phased out, but I would urge all architects to check their level of cover before embarking on any “free” work.
