I read with amazement that the CSCS scheme is £5m in the red (3 December, page 9).

Although I can appreciate that the cost of administering such an overly complex and confusingly bureaucratic process must run into millions, surely the fact that they charge £35 to sit the health and safety test and a further £600 (according to the CSCS helpdesk) to have an on-site assessor come and watch the worker must go somewhere towards balancing the books?

I know sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but with wages like this I’m thinking of becoming an assessor. (On second thoughts, how much must it charge to assess the assessors?)
