I couldn't agree more with the column by John Smith (27 June, page 34).
Skilled labour has always been wanting in our industry. But we can't really push all the blame onto the industry.

We can lure skilled workers back by offering better conditions and fair pay. But we can only provide these when the emphasis on winning projects is not on lowest cost. Building professionals and those commissioning works should look beyond the main contractor to their subcontractors, who are often using cheap labour. Using skilled labour and a well looked after workforce is going to cost. Who's willing to pay?
