Manchester’s Civil Justice Centre may have found favour with Building’s eminent panel of judges, but the verdict went in favour of Kingsdale School in our web poll, reports Katie Puckett

This year, using a series of videos, we gave visitors to our website the chance to go through the keyholes of all eight schemes nominated for Building’s 2008 Major Project of the Year award, and choose their favourite through the entirely unscientific medium of internet voting.

The music and sports buildings at Kingsdale School in Dulwich, south-east London (below), emerged victorious. Designed by architect de Rijke Marsh Morgan, the project narrowly beat Kingspan’s super-green Lighthouse at the BRE innovation park, with just over a third of the votes. In third place was Haworth Tompkins’ Stirling prize-nominated Young Vic theatre, with 16%.

Though our panel of judges selected Manchester’s filing-cabinet-cum-Civil-Justice-Centre as the winner, this scheme came fourth in our online survey. Incidentally, Ken Shuttleworth’s thoughts on the Civil Justice Centre can be seen on Building TV.

Bovis Lend Lease may have scooped the Integrated Supply Chain of the Year award for Bankside 123, but this project got less than 5% of online votes – perhaps the team needs to attempt an integrated approach to rigging online ballots … same goes for the teams at the O2 Arena, King’s Cross St Pancras station and Urban Splash’s Fort Dunlop.
