Architect designs Virgin Galactic space terminal for Richard Branson in New Mexico

New images of the first private spaceport, in New Mexico, USA, have been revealed by Foster + Partners.

The architect's 9,000m2 scheme will become the new home for Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic venture, housing a spaceship hangar and astronaut terminal control room.

The low-lying building has been specially designed to minimise the impact on the historic El Camino Real mission trail nearby, and to blend into the desert landscape.

Tenders for contractors to build the centre are invited by the New Mexico Space Authority, which is driving the proposals forward.
