Work involves building new library at Magdalene college
Suffolk contractor Cocksedge has begun work on a new Niall McLaughlin Architects-designed library at Magdalene College in Cambridge.
The firm, which is based in Mildenhall, near Bury St Edmunds, has worked for the university before – completing a student accommodation scheme for Jesus College in April last year.
The latest job is for a three-storey library, being built next to the Grade I-listed Pepys Library, that will replace existing facilities currently housed within the Pepys building, which will itself be refurbished via a separate project.
Project manager is Savills with other firms working on the scheme including QS Gleeds with structural engineer Smith & Wallwork and M&E consultant Max Fordham. The new library will include an archive centre, reading rooms and book-lined passageways.
The building’s exterior will feature gabled roofs, bay windows and chimneys to reflect the architecture of the surrounding college premises.
